I rushed to the SUV and gave my bag to the driver and hopped in next to Jeff and handed him his coffee. I was looking at my phone when I heard a whistle and looked up to see Jeff hanging out the window pointing to his watch. The next morning I stood outside the office waiting for his black SUV as I held his coffee in one hand and my cell in the other. Our relationship was already strained, and I knew this was going to cause another fight. I walked back to my office and immediately texted my boyfriend to tell him the bad news. “It’s just us,” he responded without looking up.
“Are Jennifer and the kids coming, sir?” I asked.
If someone had counted how many times I said that to Jeff in a month I’d probably be really embarrassed. “There are a few things we need to take care of out there, so be ready to leave from the office around 7 tomorrow morning.” “We’re going to my country house for a few days,” Jeff informed me. “Shut the door, Mitch,” he said as he studied his laptop screen. “Yes, sir?” I asked as I heard Elizabeth laugh behind me from the show she was watching on her iPad. Jeff’s secretary Elizabeth did almost nothing all day as he delegated every last responsibility to me. I had an office with a door right outside Jeff’s office that I was constantly running in and out of. “Mitch, I need you,” Jeff called out from his spacious office as he always did. I wasn’t sure how much longer I’d last, but I was starting to burn out from the constant work. I’ve lasted longer than anyone on Jeff’s staff at a little over a year, so I’d gained a bit of a reputation as a rising star because of it. As his Chief of Staff, I do just about everything for him in the office and out. My boss Jeff is a typical corporate executive - type A personality with impossible expectations.
